Wir erinnern uns: Pete Rock war alles andere als erfreut, dass Lupe Fiasco für seine neue Single „Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free)“ den Beat von „T.R.O.Y.“ nachbauen liess. Lupe Fiasco zeigte sich überrascht über die wütigen Tweets von Pete Rock, da dies alles abgesprochen gewesen sei. Dann schien sich die Lage aber zu beruhigen und Pete Rock schrieb auf Twitter: „I just got off da phone with lupe, we worked out our difference and we bout to get it in.“ Er stellte sogar eine Zusammenarbeit in Aussicht: „Gonna be epic and we gonna give Troy and hey the proper respect they deserve and make history.”

Wenn es nach Lupe geht ist die Sache aber noch längst nicht vom Tisch, wie er in einem Radiointerview zu verstehen gab: „It was supposed to have been settled, but instead of him doing what he’s supposed to do, he comes and puts out this weak, half-ass statement.“

Er ärgert sich vor allem darüber, dass Pete seine Aussagen nicht widerruft und Lupe und sein Team deshalb wie Lügner dastehen: „He didn’t mention any of the stuff he was supposed to recant. At least try to put back some of the credibility in me. Got us looking like liars and cheaters and shit like that. He was supposed to say the same shit he said on the phone: ‘My badd, that was wack, it was fucked up for me to say that, it was disrespectful, I was 100% in the wrong, I apologize.’”

Generell sei die Konversation wenig harmonisch verlaufen, also nicht so wie es die Aussage von Pete vermuten lassen könnte: „When we finally get on the phone, we didn’t have a nice conversation. We wasn’t on the phone like, ‘We love you Pete at the end of the day.’ I was hot! My crew was hot. The people who put it together was hot. He wasn’t just on the phone with me, he was on the phone with six people. Like, Pete what’s wrong with you? Goin’ in on us like that? We trying to pay homage to you.”

Pete habe sich aber nicht vorstellen können, seine Aussage zu widerrufen, da er dann dumm dastehen würde: „He said, ‘Man you know if I recant right now I’m gon’ look crazy. I was like, ‘You God damn right you gon’ look crazy. You got Lu out here looking crazy.’”

In dem Interview stellte er nochmals klar, dass sie bereits im November mit Pete Rock in Kontakt getreten waren und sie die ganzen Monate über das Gefühl hatten, er sei einverstanden: „The whole time, we being told from Pete Rock that we got his blessing to rock with it. He’s been talked to people from my team for the past six months.“

Er habe mühe damit, diese Verhalten zu respektieren und da ihm sein Label Atlantic den Rücken stärke, werde der Song weiterhin als Single seines kommenden Albums dienen.
